When comparing the cameras of the Sony Xperia S and the iPhone 4S, the most important feature is the resolution. This is measured in in megapixels, the lens focus type and the presence of a flash. The flash is usually either LED or xenon.
The primary camera on the Sony Xperia S is 12 megapixels (4000×3000 pixels), with autofocus and LED flash. The iPhone 4S has a camera of 8 MP (3264×2448 pixels). It also has autofocus with LED flash. The autofocus on the cameras of both phones gives it zoom and the ability to capture close up photographs. The number of megapixels is not the only measurement of the quality of the photos. You should also consider the type of lens and the size of the sensor. It takes a combination of all specs to produce a good quality photograph. In order to determine which camera is superior we need to do an actual photo test.
Our results found that overall Sony Xperia’s camera is slightly better that of the iPhone 4S. If plan to sell mobile phone for cash to a phone recycling company I would recommend that you get either the iPhone 4S or Sony Xperia S. It all depends on your personal preference for other features that these handsets have to offer.
The Sony Xperia S has other features including geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, 3D sweep panorama, and image stabilization. It has a video with continuous autofocus, video light, and stabilizer. There is also a secondary 1.3 MP camera for video calls.
iPhone 4S has touch focus, geo-tagging, face detection, and HDR (high dynamic range imaging). HDR allows a dynamic range between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than the current standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods. The iPhone 4S has a secondary camera for video calling but it works only when it is connected to Wi-Fi.
We put the two camera phones to the test and found that in bright sunny conditions the iPhone 4S captured better colour. The sky in the photograph was bluer and we were better able to see differences in range of colour. However HDR can make some photographs seem unreal.
The Sony Xperia S worked well in bright conditions as well capturing an image with no noise. The photograph was clear but the colours were not as vibrant as the image taken by the iPhone 4S. The photograph taken by the Sony Xperia S was a true depiction of reality. The image from the iPhone 4S was more vibrant do the HDR capabilities.
We found that in dark conditions the Xperia S took better photographs that the iPhone 4S because it has a superior flash. In situations where the environment was dingy both the iPhone 4S and Xperia S took photos with noise but the colours were more vibrant on the image from the iPhone.
You would expect that there would be a huge difference in picture quality between the images taken by the iPhone 4S and Xperia S because the pixel count on the latter is far superior. We found that there is not much difference in the quality of the photographs. We recommend that you get the Xperia S if you plan to take many photographs at night.
