Samsung Galaxy S3 Review

At Samsung’s latest launch party, the world’s best-selling mobile phone manufacturer unleashed the Galaxy S3 amidst a level of consumer frenzy usually reserved for Apple products. Samsung’s follow-up to the top selling mobile, the S2, has catapulted the Korean electronics company to the very top of the smartphone pile.

Here is a closer look at the current smartphone king, the Galaxy S3. A lot has been made about Samsung’s attempts to match Apple’s design acumen: although a number of mobile brands have matched the iPhone’s spec, very few, if any, have yet to come close to the iPhone’s sumptuous design. The S3 is certainly pushing the envelope in terms of aesthetic with a design ‘inspired by nature’. Its slightly rounded shape and smooth curves immediately puts one in mind of a beach-combed pebble and its audio feedback cues are recorded from real water drops.

Samsung’s S3 is mounted with a 4.8 inch super AMOLED screen – not quite as large as the Galaxy Note, but certainly getting there – and is loaded with a 720p resolution which is currently the pinnacle of smartphone screen performance.

Under the bonnet is where the Galaxy S3 really comes into its own. The quad-core Exynos processor inside the Galaxy S3 is actually very similar to the A5X processor in the latest iPad except that, as the name suggests, it has 4 cores instead of the iPad’s 2. With this extra oomph the Galaxy S3 outshines the iPhone 4S considerably; although one has to remember the imminent release of the iPhone 5, so this disparity will probably not be evident for too long. The HTC One X is currently the only other quad-core phone doing the rounds.

While the Galaxy S3’s spec already puts it out on its own at the top of the smartphone table, its host of innovative features is what has really got people talking. “Smart Stay” for instance, tracks the movement of your peepers to keep the screen on when you’re looking at it. Similarly, the Galaxy S3 will remind you of notifications when you pick it up. And the goodies don’t end there, Samsung have included voice recognition in this handset which works in a similar fashion to Apple’s Siri service. Wrapping it all up is the embedded NFC technology which will allow contactless payments and data transactions.
